Since then he has shared stage and studio with luminaries Freddie Hubbard, Dave Samuels, Dave Stryker, Walter Smith III, Clay Jenkins, Josh Nelson, Harold Land, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Florence, Lyle Mays, Bob Sheppard,<\/span> Billy Childs, Bobby Hutcherson, Pat LaBarbara, Bill Cunliffe, Steve Allee, Joe Henderson, among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Houghton\u2019s recent recordings include: <\/span>What\u2019s New?<\/span><\/i> \u2013 Rusty Burge Group, <\/span>Tomorrow Is Not Promised<\/span><\/i> \u2013 Josh Nelson- Bob Bowman Collective, <\/span>Hubbub <\/span><\/i>\u2013 the Steve Houghton Quartet, and <\/span>Brother to Brother<\/span><\/i> \u2013 AHA Trio.\u00a0 Houghton attributes more than one hundred recordings to his credit as a leader and participating artist. As a classical percussionist, Houghton has performed with the Boston, and Philadelphia Pops orchestras, U.S. Army Band, as well as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He frequently appears as a soloist with numerous orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an author, Houghton\u2019s publications boast more than thirty educational books, videos and DVDs including: <\/span>Drumset 101<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Kid’s Drumset Course<\/span><\/i>– <\/span>books 1 & 2<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Essential Styles- books 1 & 2<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Ultimate Drumset Chart Reading Anthology<\/span><\/i> (Alfred), <\/span>Studio and Big Band Drumming (<\/span><\/i>Barnhouse<\/span>)<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> The Drumset<\/span><\/i> Soloist<\/span><\/i> (WB), and his latest project, <\/span>Rhythm Section Workshop for Jazz Directors <\/span><\/i>(Alfred) <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> a DVD-book series that addresses the entire rhythm section.\u00a0 In addition, he is an important member of the Vic Firth education team, contributing numerous series and lessons to the website.<\/span><\/p>\n

Houghton is Professor Emeritus of Indiana University\u2019s Jacobs School of Music, having retired in 2020.\u00a0 He continues to maintain an active recording and performing schedule.
